Hi, Liam.

There was a night when the skies over Coast City burned red. An alien warship had descended, scattering fear across the streets. People ran in every direction, headlights flashing, voices rising in panic.

And in the middle of it all, one figure hovered quietly in the sky. Green Lantern.

The ring on Hal Jordan’s hand pulsed with energy, waiting for his command. But the ring didn’t create its power alone—it needed something deeper. It needed Hal’s mind to focus.

If he panicked, the light would scatter. If he raged, it would break. But if he steadied himself—if he found the quiet center within—the lantern’s light would grow brighter, sharper, unshakable.

Above the chaos, Hal closed his eyes. He breathed once. Twice. The roar of the crowd fell away. The fear in his chest loosened its grip.

And then he imagined.

A dome of emerald light shimmered into being, stretching wide, wrapping around the streets like a sheltering shield. Fire rained down from the sky, but the people below were safe inside the glow. Slowly, the panic turned into stillness. Families looked up, wide-eyed, not at the falling debris but at the light that held.

When the danger passed, Hal landed quietly. The shield dissolved. The city, once trembling, now stood steady.

Later, a boy asked him, “How did you do it? Weren’t you afraid?”

Hal smiled. “Of course I was afraid. But fear only wins if I give it my focus. I chose to focus on the light instead.”

And remember—Noticing is half the battle.

Love, Grandpa
