Forest Fables - Volume 2

Chapter 1

The Sparrow Who Counted Raindrops

(Patience & Small Truths)

Sparrow loved storms. She loved the sound, the smell, the sudden hush afterward. One day she tried to count the raindrops as they fell. She lost track almost immediately.

Badger watched her from the doorway. “You can’t count a storm,” he said.

“I know,” Sparrow replied, “but I can count the drops that land on this leaf.”

Badger nodded. “Small truths are still truths.”

Noticing Practice

Notice one small detail in your environment — a shadow, a sound, a texture — and stay with it for three breaths.

Reflection

What small truth did you notice today?

• Why do small things feel easier to ignore?

• What happens when you give something tiny your full attention?

Chapter 2

The Turtle and the Echoing Hill

(Steadiness & Voice)

Turtle climbed the Echoing Hill to hear her own voice bounce back. When she reached the top, she whispered, “Hello.”

The hill whispered back, “Hello.”

She tried again, louder. The hill answered louder.

Fox joined her. “Why do you climb all this way just to hear yourself?”

Turtle smiled. “Because the hill only returns what I’m willing to say.”

---

The Noticing Practice

• Speak one sentence aloud that you need to hear.

• Let it echo inside you.

Reflection

• What words do you rarely say out loud?

• What truth would you like returned to you?

• How does your voice change when you slow down?

Chapter 3

The Lantern Under the Log

(Hidden Effort & Quiet Courage)

Under an old fallen log, Mouse kept a tiny lantern. She lit it only when she felt brave enough to look at her worries.

One evening, Fox found her there. “Why hide your lantern?” he asked.

Mouse shrugged. “Because the light shows things I’m not ready to see.”

Fox sat beside her. “Then let’s look together.”

They lit the lantern. The shadows were still there — but smaller.

---

The Practice

• Name one worry.

• Imagine placing a small lantern beside it.

• See if it changes shape.

Reflection

• What do you avoid looking at?

• Who helps you face difficult things?

• What happens when you bring light to a fear?

Chapter 4

The Otter Who Forgot to Play

(Joy & Returning)

Otter was known for laughter, splashing, and sliding down riverbanks. But one winter, she stopped playing. She worked, gathered, organized — but never slid.

Badger finally asked, “When did you forget the river?”

Otter blinked. She hadn’t noticed.

So Badger nudged her gently into the water. The splash woke something inside her. She laughed — the first laugh of the season.

---

The Noticing Practice

• Do one small thing today that feels playful, even for ten seconds.

Reflection

• What part of you has gone quiet?

• What helps you return to joy?

• How does your body feel when you play

The Map Fox Never Drew

(Direction & Trust)

Fox loved making maps — of paths, streams, burrows, and berry patches. But one morning he woke with a strange feeling: He needed to walk without drawing anything.

He wandered for hours, letting the forest choose the turns.

When he returned, Badger asked, “Did you get lost?”

Fox shook his head. “No. I just let the world guide me for once.”

---

The Noticing Practice

Take a short walk — even inside your home — without planning your route.

Reflection

• When do you cling too tightly to plans?

• What happens when you let the moment guide you?

• How do you know when you’re on the right path?

And remember, Noticing is Half the Battle.
