In our last post, we stood at the edge of the woods and heard the distant clanking of the Critical Parent’s armor. Today, the curtain rises.
This is the "Epic Opus" of the Noticing Stone. It is a story about a Prince who has forgotten his power, a Critic who has grown too large, and a simple pebble that changes everything.
Whether you feel like a Sovereign today or just trying to find your way, this play is for you. Read it through. Find yourself in the characters.
THE SOVEREIGN AND THE SILENT GUEST
A Drama in Five Acts
CAST OF CHARACTERS
PRINCE EGO: The Sovereign; the part of us trying to live mindfully.
THE CRITICAL PARENT (THE CHAMBERLAIN): A figure in heavy, rusted iron.
THE EXILE: A small, quiet spirit carrying the "Old Pain."
THE MYSTIC: A Sage who lives where the earth meets the sky.
ACT I: THE NOISY THRONE
The stage is cluttered with papers and clocks. The CHORUS whispers "Should" and "Must."
THE CHAMBERLAIN: You are late, Prince! The accounts are a mess, your posture is shameful, and the neighbors think you a fool. Why do you breathe so loudly? It is inefficient!
PRINCE EGO: (Head in hands) My mind is a storm of iron. I cannot hear my own heartbeat for the sound of his clanking.
ACT II: THE CELLAR OF SHADOWS
A dark, damp place beneath the palace floor.
PRINCE EGO: Who is there? I hear weeping beneath the stones.
THE EXILE: It is I. I hide here because the Chamberlain says I am too heavy with sadness to be seen. He says if I come upstairs, the kingdom will drown.
PRINCE EGO: You are not a burden. You are part of me. But the Chamberlain has the key, and I have no strength to take it.
ACT III: THE GIFT OF THE RIDGE
The high, windy cliffs. THE MYSTIC holds a single river stone.
PRINCE EGO: I need a sword! A hammer! Something to break the iron man!
THE MYSTIC: You cannot fight noise with noise. You cannot slay a ghost with steel. Take this. (He places a stone in the Prince's palm.)
PRINCE EGO: A rock? What use is a rock against a King’s Critic?
THE MYSTIC: It has Silence. It has Weight. While the Chamberlain spins fables of the future and ghosts of the past, the stone tells only one truth: I am here. I am solid. I am now.
ACT IV: THE TRIAL OF THE PALM
Back in the Throne Room. THE CHAMBERLAIN is screaming.
THE CHAMBERLAIN: You are a failure! A fraud! Put down that pebble and listen to my judgment!
PRINCE EGO: (Closing his fingers around the stone) I notice the cool surface. I notice the weight pressing into my skin.
THE CHAMBERLAIN: Answer me! Defend yourself!
PRINCE EGO: I do not need to defend. I am simply... here. You are a whisper of wind. This stone is the weight of the world. I choose the weight.
(The Chamberlain’s armor begins to crack. He falls silent, shrinking until he is just a man in a dusty coat.)
ACT V: THE GARDEN CLEARING
Sunlight. The walls are gone. The Prince and the Exile sit together. The Stone sits on the grass between them.
PRINCE EGO: The noise has stopped. The air is clear.
THE EXILE: And I am no longer afraid to be seen.
THE MYSTIC: (From the shadows) The stone did not change the world, Prince. It simply gave you a place to stand while the storm passed.
(CURTAIN)
Your Homework from the Palace
Take a moment to let the story settle. Don't worry about "analyzing" it. Just carry the image of the Prince and his stone with you today.
In our next post, we will dive into the first secret the Prince learned: The Virtue of Silence. Until then...
