What Lies Within Us

Ralph Waldo Emerson reminds us: “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”

We often find ourselves weighed down by the past or anxious about the future. Yet, if we pause and turn inward, we discover that the strength, clarity, and stillness we need are already present. The “stone” of our awareness rests quietly, noticing the moment as it unfolds.

The past may carry memories, the future may hold uncertainties—but neither can touch the deep well within. What lies within us is not bound by time. It is the steady presence that sees, listens, and remembers.

The Noticing Stone Practice for TodayTake a moment to sit quietly. Place a smooth stone in your hand (or imagine doing so). As you hold it, notice your breath. Let thoughts of yesterday and tomorrow drift away. Ask yourself:What lies within me right now?

Carry this question gently today. Notice how it shapes the way you move, speak, and meet each moment.

Remember,

Mindfulness is in the palm of your hand.
